Atlantic Ministry News : Attention Youth: A Chance to Win a Mega Prize for Your Youth Group!
Posted by JesusAtlantic on 2009/8/5 19:20:50 (491 reads)
Youth Groups have chance to win Festival Prize Package
Youth groups throughout Atlantic Canada are encouraged to enter a contest sponsored by the Alive on the Island Festival and its partners.
“This Ultimate Prize Package Contest is open to all youth groups and offers an excellent chance of winning free admission to the festival and other great stuff,” says Rainbow Poulette, Youth Representative on the Board of Alive on the Island.
The prize package includes
10 weekend passes, accommodations for 10 people at the Cape Breton Bible Camp, meal vouchers from Boston Pizza, and
10 festival t-shirts.
To enter the contest, youth groups should visit:
http://www.aliveontheisland.com/youthcontest/index.html
Simply sign up providing the appropriate information. The winner will be drawn randomly on August 14. The winning youth group will be notified and arrangements will be made for the prize package to be delivered prior to the start of the festival on August 28th.
The more youth that sign up from each youth group...the better the chances of winning!
“The lineup of young Christian entertainers is quite impressive and includes such names as MercyMe, Jeremy Camp, Starfield and Life Support. These groups attract young audiences and we’re expecting to see a lot of youth groups from across the Atlantic Provinces,” says Rainbow Poulette. “So, we thought we’d further encourage their participation by offering a contest where they could win free admission, food, accommodations and merchandise.”
Poulette noted that festival organizers insist upon youth groups having at least one adult leader or chaperone with them throughout the duration of the festival.
Alive on the Island - Festival of Christian Unity will be held in Cape Breton from August 28-30, 2009 showcasing celebrated Christian artists and bringing together Christians from various backgrounds under a common theme of unity.
For the inaugural year, many of the events will be held in the downtown core of Sydney, with intentions in future years to host shows in other communities within Cape Breton.
When established, it is anticipated that Alive on the Island will be the largest annual event of its kind in Eastern Canada, attracting people of all ages and backgrounds from regional and national niche markets in Christian music.
Alive on the Island is presented by the Cape Breton Christian Music Festival Society. The society relies on the commitment and support of its volunteers, sponsors and funding partners including Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation.

Atlantic Ministry News : NB Author Finalist for National Award
Posted by JesusAtlantic on 2009/6/6 13:57:56 (804 reads)
PETITCODIAC—Sharon L. Fawcett of Petitcodiac, NB has been shortlisted in a national writing competition for her book HOPE FOR WHOLENESS: THE SPIRITUAL PATH TO FREEDOM FROM DEPRESSION.
Fawcett, who is a freelance writer and speaker, was one of Canada’s “Faces of Mental Illness” in Mental Illness Awareness Week’s 2008 Face Mental Illness Campaign. Since 2004 she has been working to generate awareness about mental illness and bring hope to those who are affected by it.
Fawcett’s book was written to build understanding of spirituality’s role in mental health and includes illustrations from her own nine-year battle with major clinical depression, and subsequent decade of freedom from mental illness. HOPE FOR WHOLENESS is a finalist in the Christian Living book category in The Word Guild Canadian Christian Writing Awards.
The winner will be announced on June 17 at a black-tie Awards Gala at World Vision’s headquarters in Mississauga, Ontario. The Gala is the premier event honouring the work of Canadian writers who are Christian. It will be hosted by Herbie Kuhn, popular speaker and in-house announcer for the Toronto Raptors basketball team.
The contest received a record number of 237 entries from writers in eight provinces. The 30 award categories include non-fiction books, novels, articles, columns, poems, and song lyrics. Fawcett is New Brunswick’s only finalist for a 2009 award. “I am deeply honoured to be shortlisted for this award,” Fawcett said. “Many readers have told me that Hope for Wholeness has been inspirational to them as they seek healing for their own mental illness or cope with a loved one’s illness. It is rewarding to know that what I learned through a very dark period in my own life is now bringing hope to others.”
The Word Guild is a national association consisting of more than 340 writers and editors across Canada who write from a Christian perspective and publish work in a variety of genres.

Atlantic Ministry News : Mercy Me and Gaither Vocal Band Join Alive on the Island Festival
Posted by JesusAtlantic on 2009/4/8 15:55:13 (1444 reads)
After a successful launch in February, Alive on the Island organizers are announcing additional artists for Cape Breton’s inaugural Christian music Festival being held August 28-30, 2009.
The festival’s current headliner The Oak Ridge Boys will now be joined by two additional headline acts – Bill Gaither and The Gaither Vocal Band and MercyMe.
Started in the early 1980’s, the Grammy award-winning Bill Gaither and the Gaither Vocal Band is a legendary group with a loyal following across North America. Texas-based Christian rock group MercyMe has been together for 13 years and boasts 6 albums and several Grammy nominations to their credit. Both American bands top the list of most popular and influential groups in the Christian music genre.
The festival’s headliners will be well balanced with some of the region’s top performers. In February, organizers announced local East Coast groups like The Burke Family and Life Support. Today organizers are adding to that list of local talent.
“We’ll be hosting an East Coast Gospel Show featuring, Rita MacNeil, JP Cormier, The Men of the Deeps, Hallelujah Praise Choir, Dutch Robinson and The Burke Family. These well-known musicians all share a connection to Gospel music.”
Murray explained that Rita MacNeil has recorded a number of Gospel songs on her various albums, while JP Cormier has strong roots in Southern Bluegrass Gospel. The Men of the Deeps have always sung "The Miners' Hymn". The Hallelujah Praise Choir from North Preston was honoured with an ECMA for Best Gospel Album and Dutch Robinson sings Gospel numbers in the show DRUM! Of course, The Burke Family is no stranger to the Christian music scene and will play several shows during the festival. Steven Muise will serve as the show’s Artistic Director.
Murray also confirmed that popular Canadian soul band Newworldson will be taking the stage during the inaugural festival, along with Winnipeg-based Fresh I.E. whose hip hop lyrics are touching younger generations of Christians throughout North America.
Closer to home, festival organizers are proud to have Halifax’s ECMA award-winning Gospel singer Chelsea Nisbett bring her soulful lyrics to festival participants. Moncton-based band The Silent has been touring and recording in Canada and the US and will also join the prestigious ranks of numerous East Coast musicians who are booked to play during the festival weekend this summer.
Local Cape Breton favourite Eric Angus Whyte is also part of the roster of local talent who will be sharing stages with many renowned national and international Christian acts. Specifically, organizers are planning shows featuring local Christian performers and those details will be announced soon.
Festival passes go on sale 9:00 am on Tuesday, April 21st, 2009. Passes can be purchased online at www.reservatech.net by phone toll free 1-877-545-3330 or 564-6668; or in person at the Centre 200 Box Office.
Full details on the passes are available on the festival website www.aliveontheisland.ca Individual concert tickets will go on sale May 19th.

Posted by JesusAtlantic on 2009/3/14 12:59:50 (689 reads)
Stephanie Mainville is the runner up at this year’s Canadian Radio Star – the 16th annual national song writing competition. Popular vote combined with the decisions by a panel of judges chosen by Songwriters Association of Canada (SAC) resulted in Mainville being selected as this year’s first runner up at the Canadian Radio Star Showcase. Mainville’s song “Wait” finished second behind this year’s Grand Prize winner: “Tonight, I Love You”, by BC band “The Latency”.
The announcement was made at Canadian Music Week in Toronto tonight at the Library Bar, Fairmont Royal York Hotel. All of the regional finalists had an opportunity to perform at the Canadian Radio Star showcase – a Grand Finale which included performances by host Andy Kim.
Regional finalists were picked by participating radio stations and public on-line voting based on the creativity, originality, composition, lyrics, melody and radio airplay potential of their songs. Presented by the Songwriters Association of Canada and supported by Astral Media and Canadian Music Week, the event discovers potential stars at the regional, grassroots level and showcases them to the music industry and general public alike. Mainville was the New Brunswick regional winner as selected by C98.9 Big John FM in Saint John.
